Curriculum

Highlands International School offers an American diploma and follows an American-style curriculum. The curriculum of HIS is based on the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and can be found at www.ncpublicschools.org .

University Acceptance

Through the curriculum at Highlands International School, students are prepared for university settings all around the world. However, most of our graduates go on to study in the United States.

Our graduates have gone on to study in the United States, Canada, and Bolivia.

English as a Foreign Language

  • 60% of all students at Highlands speak English as a second language
  • All EFL students receive extra support from a specialized EFL teacher
  • Ideally, families who desire their children to have an English-speaking education should enroll their students in HIS at the age of 4. Research indicates that students below the age of 6 learn English significantly faster and with more competence than after the age of 6.

SAT Highlights

  • Highlands’ average composite score on the SAT is 1055, a combination of the average critical reading score of 520, the average mathematics score of 535. (Possible scores range from 200 to 800 on each section)
  • Highlands mathematics average is 55 points above the US national average of 515 (2007 results)
  • Highlands reading average is 45 points above the US National average of 502 (2007 results)
